The structure of a baby’s skin is basically the same as adult skin. However, baby skin is not quite finished yet! This makes baby skin extra vulnerable. The epidermis, the most superficial layer of skin, is many times thinner than adult skin. The horny layer is not yet thick enough and the skin cells are less densely packed. As a result, the skin is still ‘open’, so to speak. On top of the horny layer is the natural skin fat: the lipids. Baby skin produces less fat than adult skin. When this layer becomes too thin, the skin can start to dry out! This layer of fat is broken down unnoticed by, for example, water or the use of certain soap products.
Also, a baby’s natural, protective acid mantle is not yet fully developed. This acid mantle has an acidity of 5.5 pH. It is important to use products that match the pH value of the acid mantle. This way, the acid mantle is not broken down but rather extra protected. All Inoli Skin Care products are pH skin-neutral. Building up the acid mantle takes at least 6 months.
Baby skin development
A baby’s skin is not fully developed until the age of four! Until then, mums and dads should note that the skin is a lot thinner, the protective layer is still underdeveloped and the epidermis is not yet fully closed. Also, a baby’s skin does not produce much fat, so there is a chance of dry skin.
Irritations from outside
Inoli Skin Care is specially designed for anyone with fragile, sensitive and/or dry skin. This certainly includes the smallest of our population! Babies have enormously vulnerable skin. After birth, they have a thin ‘layer’ that protects them. After a few days, this disappears and mums and dads will have to lend a hand!
